Alexandria Public Schools continues to maintain stable overall enrollment

Tuesday, October 19, 2021
ALEXANDRIA, Minn.-- Enrollment in the Alexandria Public Schools is stable and showing a slight increase of 1.1% over the school district’s 2020-21 school year ending enrollment count recorded in June.

Director of Business Services, Trevor Peterson presented the official October 1 enrollment report at the October 18 School Board meeting. The report shows there were 4,031 students enrolled in the district on October 1 this year. This number is spot on with district projections, 22 students less (-0.5%) than this time last year, and 46 students above (1.1%) our 2020-21 school year ending enrollment count.

Annually, enrollment projections are calculated in February using the most current enrollment data available to assist the School Board in budget planning for the upcoming school year. The district considers a number of sources when calculating enrollment projections, including district enrollment history, birth rates for Douglas County, and 0-4 year old school census data.

“The District takes a conservative approach to projections calculated in February each year to help ensure that staff and financial resources are aligned for a balanced budget,” stated Peterson. “It’s encouraging to see that our district enrollment has remained stable during the ongoing pandemic and has increased over where we ended last school year.”

The enrollment report breakdown by level shows that on October 1, the district had:

  • 1,678 elementary school students (grades K-5), a decrease of 5 students from June;
  • 979 middle school students (grades 6-8), an increase of 4;
  • 1,314 high school students (grades 9-12), an increase of 47; and
  • 60 early childhood special education students, annual enrollment placeholder (count not based on actual students but based on equivalency of service hours).

Pockets of celebration within the district data reflect the largest class in the elementary grades is kindergarten, and the district welcomed 51 new open enrolled students for the 2021-22 school year.
