Patience appointed to fulfill Alexandria School Board vacancy

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- At a special meeting held April 14, the Alexandria School Board unanimously approved the appointment of Jeff Patience to fulfill a vacancy on the Board created by the recent resignation of board clerk, Bob Cunniff.

Once the appointment is made, a 30-day waiting period is imposed before the appointee is seated. Once the 30-day waiting period has been satisfied, it is anticipated that Patience would be officially sworn in at the regular board meeting on May 17.  At the same meeting, the board will reassign committee appointments that Cunniff previously held.

Jeff holds an accounting degree from North Dakota State University. He is the senior vice president and commercial lender at Bell Bank in Alexandria. He is the father of two – Elise, a junior at Alexandria Area High School (AAHS) and Ethan, a 2020 graduate of AAHS, who is attending the University of Oregon.

His school involvement has included serving on the Budget Advisory Finance Council, the Academies of Alexandria Freshman Advisory Committee, DECA volunteer and partnering on a summer externship program for one of the high school’s business teachers. His community involvement currently includes serving on the Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission (AAEDC) Board of Directors, the AAEDC Executive Board, Alexandria Dollars for Scholars and Sertoma. Jeff is also a former youth hockey coach for Alexandria Area Hockey Association, former member of the Jaycees and Jingle Bells Foundation.

Minnesota statute requires that the vacancy be filled by school board appointment until a special election is held in the current year. The special election will be held on November 2 and the candidate chosen in the special election will take office in November 2021 and serve until January 2023. The period for filing affidavits of candidacy for the special election is May 18 – June 1, 2021 and the filing fee is $2.00. The School Board is a policy-making body responsible for the district’s educational direction, curriculum, facilities, financial planning and employee relations.
