Alexandria School Board approves learning plans for fall

The Alexandria School Board voted unanimously tonight to approve the school district’s learning models for the start of the 2020-21 school year. Elementary students (K-5) will return to school in-person, five days a week.

Secondary students (Grades 6-12) will be in a safe start model to begin the school year from September 8-25. The district is proposing to assign students into two groups – Group A (A-K) and Group B (L-Z). In this manner students attend 2-3 days a week for in-person instruction and the remaining days at home. Students who are at home will be attending the class virtually at the same time via the use of webcams and Google Meet. Structures and schedules will be consistent whether at home or in school. This safe start will reduce the numbers in our middle school and high school, allowing time to practice safe protocols and procedures and monitor local health data before returning all secondary students. An additional evaluation will take place after the initial 14-day period with the following options:

  • Continue with model through another 14-day period
  • Seek to return to all in-person on September 28th

Next steps for the start of school
School plans, schedules and class lists are underway. Schools will be scheduling individual in-person or small group gatherings for transition years of Kindergarten, 6th and 9th grades, and for new students to the district. Virtual orientation connection events will be planned for other grade levels. Watch for more information from your child’s school by the week of August 24th.

If you have not yet communicated your student(s) intent to return, please contact your child’s school so we can be prepared to meet their learning needs.

“This is really a community effort,” stated Superintendent Sansted. “We are all wanting the same thing for our students, staff and families – a safe start to the school year.”
