Hochsprung Wins Alexandria School District Spelling Bee, Advances to Regional Bee

ALEXANDRIA, Minn.-- Discovery Middle School eighth-grader Josie Hochsprung won the Alexandria School District Spelling Bee and will now advance to the Regional Spelling Bee in February. After 10 rounds of competition, Josie won by correctly spelling “calamitous” and “fixity”. Seventh grader, Erick Bergerson, of Discovery Middle School is the runner up. The spelling bee followed the same rules as the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Eleven students representing 999 students in grades 6-8 participated in the oral round of the Spelling Bee Finals at Discovery Middle School on January 22. The District Spelling Bee determines who will represent Alexandria Public Schools at the Regional Spelling Bee event on February 4 in Fergus Falls.

Student participants from 6th – 8th grade were:

6th grade – Lucas Friday, Miles Bryce, Rhett Granning, Ellie Sticha

7th grade –  Monroe Glade, Maia Fuglestad, Erick Bergerson

8th grade – Mylee Montag, Emma Gylsen, Greta Oldenkamp, Josie Hochsprung
