Inclement Weather Communication

  • We want to remind staff, parents and students of our communication procedures during inclement weather conditions.

Should weather conditions warrant, schools may be either closed, start two hours late, or dismissed early. When possible, decisions to close or delay the start of school will be made by 6:00 a.m. In all these situations, you can expect the following communication from the school district:
    • A district official will utilize our mass notification system, Blackboard Connect, to call parents and staff regarding any change to the school schedule. Please make sure that your emergency contact information on file with your child's school is current.
    • The district will post closing, delay or early dismissal information on the front page of our website using an On-Screen alert message banner. Radio and television stations will also be notified.

When Alexandria Public Schools close, generally everything closes, including all extracurricular activities, after school Club, Community Education youth and adult classes, Early Childhood programs, and events scheduled by non-district groups. Compass School Age Care will be open for enrolled Compass students when school starts two hours late, or is dismissed early. Compass will be closed to all students when school is closed. Refer to the Compass Handbook or call Community Education at (320) 762-3310 for eligibility and details.

The school district boundaries encompass 341.5 square miles and have varying road conditions in times of severe weather. Parents should assess their particular situation and if you believe the weather is hazardous, you may keep your child at home and call the school attendance line. The absence will be an excused absence.
